THE BRIEF

In 2012, Heritage Solutions were commissioned by the Vestry of St John’s Church to lead the major renovation of an iconic church in Perth.

The renovations involved a complete refurbishment of the interior and Strathearn were awarded the contract to supply and install new flooring in the main congregational area and a new stone floor for the altar.

THE SOLUTION

The floor for the main congregational area needed to introduce warmth and practicality, while maintaining a traditional feel. The chosen floor was our solid natural grade oak, boards of 140mm wide, finished with a commercial grade base coat and lacquer (Supplier Bona Ltd). The natural grade of the timber introduced character, the board width selected provided the traditional feel, and the rich honey finish applied by our Oak Craftsmen achieved the required warm and welcoming ambience.

The stone flooring chosen for the altar could not have been more in keeping with the location – the Spoleto Tumbled Limestone came all the way from Jerusalem, where the stone adorns many religious buildings, looking as good now as it did hundreds of years ago. The large format, random length tile selected was in keeping with the traditional brief, and the soft grey and gold tones of the stone make it a very practical choice for high traffic areas.
