THE BRIEF

When Alison and Gil first approached us, they had recently acquired a beautiful traditional Scottish country home – close to the historical Innerpeffray Library, near Crieff.

They were in the midst of building a new and grand extension to the back of the property that included modern and traditional features, perfectly tying the old house in with the new.

The oak flooring for the new extension needed to have a traditional feel but offer modern practicality. A sensible solution was also needed for the entrance areas and back door utility – anyone living in the Scottish countryside knows how much mud there is to be contended with!

THE SOLUTION

For the kitchen, dining, hallway and main living areas in the extension, our Dijon Vieux 180mm wide, 20mm thick, engineered oak flooring with a natural hardwax oil finish was chosen. Board running direction was a consideration as the hallway was L-shaped but often, when a choice is 50:50, it helps to consider the sources of light and the flow through the rooms from one area to another.

For the utility, our Rustic Multicolour slate was the perfect choice. Slate is a traditional ‘Scottish’ finish and the striking range of colours in the multicolour slate perfectly disguise muddy floors until wash day.

Alison and Gil also chose a stone effect tile from our porcelain range, Pierre beige, for their new shower room and sauna area. Our traditional Velentre limestone flags also featured under the porch area outside, tying in beautifully with the traditional feel of the property.

We enjoyed working with Alison and Gil – they had a clear understanding of what they wanted but were receptive and grateful for our guidance too. The finished extension looks absolutely fabulous!
