The Brief

Glenn and Steve of Spoiled Hairdressing first approached us in October 2014. They were opening a new salon in St Andrews to complement their busy salon in Cupar. The property at 9 Albany Place was a renovation challenge - it was originally one of the old town farms of St Andrews and was built with ancient, thick stone walls. The interior had undergone a number of evolutions over the years and the task to convert the rooms into a welcoming, functional and yet modern salon was not an easy one! Glenn and Steve recognised that the choice of flooring was a very important one. The chosen floor would act as the foundation to the look that they wanted to achieve overall but it also had to be a practical surface that was hard-wearing, slip-resistant and easy to look after too.

The Solution

It was actually surprisingly easy to find the perfect floors for Glenn and Steve. The moment they walked into our new show area and saw our Matisse limestone, they loved with its soft, warm grey tones and the impressive flag format. Glenn had originally planned to have a square-edge tile for a sharper look, to work in with the very contemporary fixtures in the new salon. But, the use of the Matisse limestone, with its softly tumbled edges worked as the perfect transition between the old and the new - helping to pull together the old features that Glenn had retained of the original farm house with the new fabulous futuristic salon fittings.

Glenn and Steve were also looking for a timber floor solution for the reception area and the barber shop. They wanted a parquet floor, in cool grey, that would work alongside the Matisse limestone and our Chambord Aquitaine parquet fitted the bill perfectly. The brushed textured surface finish provides a tough and practical wear surface, enhancing the grain too, and the grey oil finish is easy to clean and will only improve with time.

As always, when working in old properties, the flooring installation presented some challenges, but Glenn and Steve's project management skills ensured that all went as smoothly as possible and challenges were met and resolved quickly. Our joiner, Neil, demonstrated great skill with his scribing work when installing the parquet blocks in the barber's shop where the old stone built wall had been exposed. Each block had to be carefully marked and cut for a perfectly moulded finish. We also produced and installed bespoke timber mouldings and trims to provide that perfect finish at the base of the new shelving units and at the entrance steps - little touches that make all the difference!

In the client's cloakroom, we installed our smoky Argenti polished marble - a beautiful finish and another great choice by Glenn and Steve!
